About

Cymbidium 'Cali Night' is an evergreen, epiphytic orchid characterized by its narrow, oval leaves that can grow up to 60 cm in length. From winter through spring, it produces long stems that are either upright or arching, showcasing flowers that range from a rich purple to a near-black hue, each adorned with a delicate white edge.

About the genus

Cymbidium species are orchids that can grow as epiphytes, lithophytes, or terrestrial plants. They feature noticeable spherical to ovoid pseudobulbs, elongated linear leaves, and thick white roots. These orchids produce multiple long-lasting flowers, characterized by a unique three-lobed lip, which emerge from erect or arching spikes at the base of the pseudobulbs.

Care notes

Cultivation
Best grown at temperatures of around 16°C in the day and 10°C at night. Ensure adequate light levels, but avoid direct sunlight. Water thoroughly when the growing medium is almost dry and allow to drain; allow to dry out between watering during the winter. Fertilise regularly and re-pot after flowering when pot bound using a suitable orchid compost. If possible, put the plant outside in dappled shade after the last frost and bring back in before the frosts start to aid flower initiation. See indoor orchid cultivation
Pruning
No pruning required
Propagation
Propagate by division; remove and replant old pseudobulbs when repotting in spring
Pest resistance
May be susceptible to aphids, glasshouse red spider mite, slugs and mealybugs
Disease resistance
Generally disease-free
