About
Cornus kousa var. chinensis 'Great Star' is a robust shrub or small tree that can reach heights of up to 5 meters. It features a central trunk with horizontal branches that emerge from the base. The leaves are ovate and mid-green, transforming into shades of red and orange during the fall. From a young age, this plant produces clusters of large blooms measuring 10 cm across. The flowers are surrounded by white bracts that resemble petals, rising above the leaves starting in late May and eventually turning a rose pink. In autumn, the plant bears fleshy, red fruits that resemble strawberries.
About the genus
Cornus includes a variety of deciduous shrubs and trees, as well as prostrate, woody perennials, some featuring vibrant young stems. The small flowers appear in compact clusters, occasionally accompanied by prominent bracts. Several species display attractive foliage in the fall.
