About the genus

This genus comprises more than 400 species of dioecious shrubs and herbaceous perennials, which can be either deciduous or evergreen, and are found across North, Central, and South America. The leaves may be arranged alternately or may be entirely absent. The flower heads appear in axillary panicles or corymbs.
